Searching, Viewing and Refunding Transactions in the Authorize.net Payment Gateway

You can easily search and view transaction details in Authorize.net, as well as make full or partial refunds. Authorize.net makes it easy to void or refund a transaction, but you need to know when to void a transaction verse refunding a transaction.

Transaction Refunds are for older transaction. If you need to credit back a payment to a customer for a same-day transaction, then you'll need to Void it instead.

Read the instructions below to learn how to Search, View and Refund transactions.


After logging into your Authorize.net account, click on the link for Transaction Search.


You can type any transaction details such as a name, credit card number, invoice number, transaction ID and then hit search.


You can also view all transactions during a specific timeframe by searching the Settlement date.
Just select a date range FROM and TO and then hit search.
Each date listed in the dropdown menu is the settlement date and indicates that you processed at least 1 credit card that day.


When you see the transaction, click on the Transaction ID for more details.


Now you can view all the transaction information on the Transaction Detail screen.
Optional, if you also need to preform a Refund, then click the Refund button.


In the Refund window, you can refund the full amount, or type in a partial amount in the Payment Amount field to refund a portion of the transaction back to the customer.
You can optionally put in a description, or check the box to email the customer.


A confirmation screen will show the new transaction ID that is assigned to the refund.


Now, when you view the transaction, you will see that the status is changed to Refunded/Pending Settlement.
This transaction will be batched out for settlement at the end of the day.


When a transaction is refunded, the funds will show up in the customers account within 3-5 business days, depending on their bank. Once a transaction is refunded, you may need to record the cancelled payment in your POS, shopping cart or accounting software if applicable.
