How To Rotate An Image Using The Free Image Editor: Gimp

Not all digital cameras save images in the same way. Quite often when you take a vertical, portrait image it will save the image as a horizontal, landscape image, so when you go to display the image it is rotated incorrectly. The reason this happens is because digital cameras will either save a vertical image as a horizontal image and then embed orientation details in the extra EXIF data within the file, or save the actual image pixels in a vertical aspect. Some display software will recognize the orientation data and rotate it correctly, while other software will completely ignore the embeded rotation instructions. So it may be necessary to just re-save the image in your editing software as the correct rotation and the editing software will actually shift the pixels to be a vertical image.

In the tutorial below we'll walk you through on how to get the free image editing software called Gimp, and then how to use the software to rotate your vertical images and save them.

As you can see in the image below, we have a vertical image that displays as a horizontal image.

First, you will need to go to the link below and download the free Gimp software from their website.
https://www.gimp.org/downloads/

Simply install the program and follow the install instructions until it is finished

Now find the Gimp icon on your computer and double-click it to open the program.

The software interface should look similar to the image below.
Now open the image in the program by either draging-and-droping your image file onto the program or go up to File and click Open and find the location of the file on your computer.

If the image is a horizontal image but has vertical rotation instructions in the file data then the rotation dialog box will pop up.
Simply click Rotate and the image will rotate correctly in the program.

Now the image is displaying correctly in the program.

Next you will need to save the image.
Go to File and click Export As.

Choose the Name that you want to save the file as, and also select JPEG Image and then click Export.

Now you have a correctly rotated image that will display vertical no matter where you display the image.
